The FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round

Saturday 25th September 2004

The Braves travelled to Ely City in Cambridgeshire in the 2nd Qualifying round of the Vase. The first 10 minutes was a scrappy encounter with both teams seeming content just to hold possession. Grant Smith down the right looked sharp took the game to Ely, in the 12 minute Smith crossed the ball found the rejuvenated Felice who shot just wide of the post. In the 19th minute Johnny Quinn sending Glenn Connolly down the left Connolly skipping past Ely's Capt Ashley Taylor placed a great ball into the danger area collected competently by Tim Catley Ely's Keeper.

In the 21st minute The Manor looking the better side. Nicky Mitchell who cut short his weekend break to be with his team mates sent a beautifully timed ball over the top of the Ely Defence on to the foot of Felice again just wide of the post. Quinny The Manor Skipper now starting to dominate the midfield kept encouraging his players to push forward whilst looking organised at the back. 32 minutes Quinny holding up the ball looking for the next attack cut in and went past two defenders and from 30 yards noticing the keeper was out of his goal tried chipping the the ball landing just over the bar.

33 minutes gone and this time Forde collecting the ball just outside the penalty area went around a defender lining up his shot and mistimed the ball just wide of the post. The Manor looking composed and were clearly in control of the game. GOAL in the 34th Minute Quinny once more collecting the ball from the middle of the park sent a fabulous ball slightly to his right and over Ely's defenders, Forde collected the ball just inside the area muscled past an oncoming defender the keeper looking alert tried to cut him off however Forde anticipating his reaction rounded the keeper and from a tight angle slotted home for the Manor. 0-1 to the Braves.

Ely come back at the Manor with some good build up play with Craig Donaldson and David Cornwall looking threatening for periods of the game. In the 39th minute a lost ball over the top running towards the corner flag seemed under control by Ely defender Martin Gray, Felice continued to chase 40 yards with lightening pace gathered the ball off the struggling defender, running towards the goal hit his shot just wide of the post.

In the second half the Manor came out equally positive as the first half. With Forde and Felice attacking down the centre. The Manor defence looking so strong with Tony Marsh, Nicky Mitchell, Grant Smith and new boy Sam Williams playing some quality football. The Manor now looking really sharp and alert in defence, giving no margin to Ely's attackers. Lee Whitelock controlling the distribution in the middle of the park allowed the two Manor wingers time to find plenty of space.

55th Minute Sammy Marks collecting a great ball from Williams, Marks looking sharp all afternoon after a lengthy break took the ball wide, looking up for a split second noticing Forde making one of his usual runs down the centre towards Ely's goal, Marks sending a superb ball to the feet of Forde, Forde with one touch too many and Catley collecting the ball off the toes of Forde.

GOAL 58th minute, Sammy Marks charging down the right into Ely's half cut a ball in to Forde who held the ball to allow Quinny to find some space, Forde noticing Quinn had found a yard sent the ball to feet, Quinny without looking up knew instinctively where the goal was hit a 25 yard Thunder bolt hitting the underside of the bar and into the net, Catley having no chance of stopping the shot 0-2 up for the Manor.

63rd minute and Ely now pressing The Manor hard, Donaldson taking the ball right and cut in firing his shoot just wide of the post. 65th minute and Ely press on this time from a free kick sent the ball high into the danger area, Carl Prince The Manor keeper challenged by Cornwall who headed the ball just over the bar. Ely now playing their best football of the game pinned the Manor back into their own half. In the 71st minute the Manor making their first substitute Davy Armstrong for Jason Felice. 72nd minute Ely attacking once more down the middle found a bit of space and Donaldson let fire a 20 yard shot hitting the bar at great speed.

By now Ely City playing some fabulous football kept the pressure on the Manor defence. Tony Marsh playing his normal defensive role and always giving 100% meant that the Manor kept their composer. Nicky Mitchell, Grant Smith and Sam Williams all playing superbly.

Manor make their second substitute in the 84th minute Steve Whitelock on for Sam Marks.

In the 85th Minute the Manor appeared to regain control of the game and had several chances to score, Lee Whitelock broke free down the right hit his shot great save by Catley, again in the 86th minute from a Manor Corner Forde header just wide of the post. 87th minute and The Young 16 year old Lewis Jones on for Forde. 88 minute and Ely with their best chance of the game just in front of goal Donaldson mistiming his shot just wide of the post. 89th minute and Jones found himself free down the right hand side and running towards the keeper bravely decided to have a go himself only to be foiled by the keeper who read the situation well and stood his ground to collect Jones shot.

The Manor now go into the 1st round proper of the FA Vase. Many positives from Today's game. Glenn Connolly candidate for MOM showed great skill and determination on the ball, completely lost his marker time and time again and was involved in much of the attacking play. Sam Williams young seventeen year old looks to be a Manor hit, great find by Kirk Whitelock.

Quinny proving to be a changed man since becoming Skipper. The players now looking to him for inspiration and encouragement. Johnny's previous disciplinary record has left a lot to be desired, but he now realises the best way to hurt the opposition is through he's football rather then verbally. Credit to Johnny and his team. His goal and overall work rate makes him Manor Man of the match.
