Essex Senior League

wednesday 14th January 2009 - Kick Off 7:45pm

The Manor started this midweek home game with a new central defensive pairing of Steve Willis and Steve Reading and it was great to see them in action again for the club.

Richard Simpson slotted in as the holding midfield player. The Manor started off very brightly in this league fixture' but Basildon soon showed that they were very dangerous on the break and Manor keeper Nick Wilson showed why he is the best keeper in the league when he made some great saves to keep the visitors at bay.

After these early alarms the home side took control for a while and a great move down the right flank allowed Danny Alleyne to play a great ball in for Joe May to slot in at the far post, 1-0 to the Manor.

This lead was short lived as the right side of the home defence was caught in possession and the visitors drilled a low deflected shot past the Manor keeper to level the scores.

Shortly after this the Manor had to reorganise as Carl Bailey was injured and skipper Richard Simpson had to go to right back. This change was the turning point of the game as the home side lost their midfield thrust and the visitors ended the first half on top.

This domination was even more apparent in the second half , with the Manor goal being bombarded by the visitors and only a series of great saves by Nick Wilson kept the scores level.

The home side had one good chance but failed to deliver and it must be said that the Manor were lucky to get away with a draw. The game was hard fought but excellently controlled by referee Kirk English and his assistants.

Manor Manager Kevin Durrant said "We did not play anywhere near the standard that we have set recently' but it is a sign of how great team spirit can get you something even when you have a bad day at the office as we did today. We are resolute and determined to keep up our challenge in the League and our up coming Cup match"
