Manor 2008-2009 Awards

Thursday 28th May 2009

Above: Paul Norris -
"most definitely a success!”

The Manor's end of season day out at Newmarket races on the 2nd May was an overwhelming success, according to coach Paul Norris. Club officials, management, players and supporters attended the 2,000 Guineas day at the famous racecourse and despite not having much success on the track – a good day out was had by all.

Norris said: “It was a terrific day out and everybody who came along thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We boarded the coach at 10am in Barking and the last few standing made it home around 2am on the Sunday – so it was most definitely a success!”

The trip was a well deserved reward for the Manor boys who finished a creditable 6th in the Essex Senior League in Kevin Durrant’s first season in charge at the club. Durrant said: “We had a good day, a few drinks and the atmosphere was fantastic. We’ve got a really good spirit and you have seen with Romford this season, and with Waltham Abbey in the Ryman One North that if you can harness that you have a chance of success. We will definitely look to do something like this again at the end of next season – hopefully we will have something really big to celebrate!!”

On the coach the Manor’s end of season presentations took place. The winners were:

Players’ Player of the season:
Dean Frett

Managers Player of the season:
Richard Simpson
Supporters Player of the season:
Dean Frett
Golden Boot:
Jerry Nkrumah

In the spirit of looking to build on their achievement Eton Manor will be starting pre-season training officially on Monday 22nd June. Time and location are to be confirmed. Any players who believe that they are capable of playing for an ambitious Step 5 Club and who are interested in joining the Manor can call Kevin Durrant on 07966047932.

"Looking Forward to the Challenge of Next Season"

The Manor's First Team Manager Kevin Durrant lifts the lid on the his first season in charge of the Manor. Current speaks honestly about the season from the first call made by Club Chairman Reg Curtis offering him the Managers position to the final game of the League Season Durrant said "

"Now that the season has ended I’ve taken a little time to reflect before putting together my notes for the season. I should start at the beginning, which for me was a telephone call from Reg Curtis on Wednesday 2nd September 2008. At the time I was at Brentwood Town as Chief Scout. It was a job that I was very happy doing. But I knew instantly when Reg offered me the Eton Manor job that I was going to say yes. I’ve known Reg a long time and I honestly believe that this a great club and a great job to have."

Norris "That's A Wrap"

Monday 27th April 2009

Above: Paul Norris-
Head Coach

The Manor's First Team Coach Paul Norris gives his verdict on the 2008-2009 League season. Norris speaking with emfc.co.uk News said"Well that’s a wrap. I can’t quite believe how quickly this season has disappeared"

"It was 10 months ago that I first attended an Eton Manor training session with Billy Cove as the new manager looking forward to the season ahead. Unfortunately it all went sour quite quickly for Billy, which is a shame because he is a decent bloke and he really does have Eton Manor in his blood."

"I said at the time that I was delighted to see Kevin Durrant and Nick Clark turn up as our new management duo. They have their own "unique" style but they have done an absolutely marvelous job at the Manor. The three of us have worked as hard as possible this year and have put in some serious hours, not only on match days but in terms of planning, selection, scouting and organising."

Proud of his players

The Manor rounded off their season with a 1-1 draw at Bowers & Pitsea - a result which saw the Manor secure a credible 6th placed finish within the Essex Senior League.

Manor Head Coach Paul Norris rolled back the years with a virtuoso performance as a late substitute playing on the right of a 3 pronged Manor attack. However, it was the home side who had the better of the first 45 minutes and but for a couple of good saves by Manor keeper Nick Wilson in the Manor goal they might have taken a lead into half time.

The Manor lost Michael Gheorgiou to a first half injury which saw Aaron May move into midfield and Tony Hadley slotted in seamlessly at right full back. His name might not have been Rio but this was a performance that certainly was GOLD.

Man of the Match

The Manor entertained Burnham for this ESL game and it soon became apparent that many of their players were really feeling the effects of the tough match that they had playded against Enfield 1893 on Tuesday night. With a very small squad Manager Kevin Durrant was unable to make many changes .The game was played pretty direct by both sides and indeed these were the right tactics as the pitch was very hard and so getting the ball down and passing was not really an option.

Neither side managed to fashion anything of note in a dour first half. After the interval the Braves replaced a tired Joe May with Courtney Linton and also took off Jerry Nkrumah and Joe Nightingill to give them some respite before the Manor's final game this Saturday away to Bowers & Pitsea.

Tuesday 21st April 2009

Above: Courtney Linton -
Match Winner

The Manor started this game with a passion and tempo that Manager Kevin Durrant had demanded in his pre- match talk. They immediately took the game to their opponents Enfield 1893 and easily had the better of the opening exchanges.

Wide players Tom Nyama and Courtney Linton worked up and down the flanks tirelessly and with Dean Frett making late forays forward to support the tigerish Jerry Nkrumah Enfield were under extreme pressure. Joe May was his usual skillfull self and Michael Ghiorghiou, in a holding mid field role was discipline personified.

The Manor back four of Danny Alleyne, Richard Simpson, Neil Barrett and Joe Nightingill were unfazed by any attacking threat by Enfield. The Braves keeper Nick Wilson was his usual confident self and this whole team ethic constantly had Enfield on the back foot.

Manor Looking for new Club Secretary

Tuesday 21st April 2009

Above: Enrique Nespereira - Stepping down as
Club Secretary

The Manor are looking for a committed and organised individual to take on the role of Club Secretary next season.

Enrique Nespereira has held the position in recent years, but unfortunately due to work and family commitments he has struggled to dedicate the necessary time to the role this season.

Chairman Reg Curtis paid tribute to the work Nespereira has put into the role saying: “I’m very grateful to Enrique for the work he’s done for the club. He’s my son-in-law and he has worked very hard for Eton Manor. However, with the children growing up and work pressures in the current situation he has not been able to attend as many games as we would all have liked this season. He will remain an important friend of the club and we all look forward to seeing him at matches in the future.”

The Club have enjoyed a strong first season under manager Kevin Durrant and are likely to finish in the top 6 or 7 of the Essex Senior League, a base from which Durrant is keen to push on next season. He said: “We are looking for a secretary who wants to be part of an exciting period for the club. I think we can be up amongst the promotion hopefuls next season and having a good secretary to deal with all the administrative issues at the club will be a big burden lifted of myself and my coaching staff who have shouldered a lot of the match day work this season.”

The ideal candidate would have experience of working within non-league football as a secretary or assistant secretary, be located in or around the East London area and have their own transport. However, the club would be happy to take applications for the role from any committed individuals who feel that they have something to offer.

Interested parties should contact Kevin Durrant on 07966 047932

Eton Manor 3, Clapton 1

Saturday 18th April 2009

The Manor started this home game against Clapton with the intention of trying to get maximum points from their remaining 4 matches and Assistant Manager Nick Clark had emphasised this in his pre- match talk.

Manager Kevin Durrant was at pains to point out that the pitch would be very uneven and that it was essential to keep moving the ball on after one or two touches and not dwell on it .

The Braves. should have gone 2 up within 10 minutes against their opponents but poor control and finishing let them down. In fairness conditions were difficult but if players had stuck to the gaffers advice they would have sliced through the visitors defence at will.

Eton Manor 0, Romford 1

Saturday 11th April 2009

The Manor entertained High flyers Romford for this clash and even though Manager Kevin Durrent and coach Paul Norris had emphasised the importance of a committed first 20 minutes, the Braves were 2nd best for much of the opening phase of the game.

In truth, although the visitors created little, it was only the strength of the Manor back 4 and keeper Nick Wisons sure handling that kept them on terms. However from a well worked corner the visitors took the lead when the Manor defenders failed to pick up the runner, 1-0 to Romford.

Stat Attack - Season Round-Up

Thursday 9th April 2009

Leading Goal Scorer

Jerry Nkrumah leads the Eton Manor scoring charts this season, with a dozen strikes in league and cup.

Nkrumah’s season started late and his first goal came at the end of October when he netted a first half brace in the 3-3 home draw with Barkingside in the league. It was the first of 4 braces for Jerry who also found the net twice at Enfield and again in the turn around victory against Mauritius and finally in the weekend win a Sawbridgeworth.

Nkrumah also scored once in the league win at Burnham in December and again in the 4-3 defeat at Basildon in February. Jerry’s two cup goals came in the Gordon Brasted quarter final victory at Bowers & Pitsea and in the devastating semi final defeat at Burnham.

Monday 6th April 2009

The Manor's travelled to local neighbours Barkingside for this ESL match and had an enforced change with Young Arun May making his first start at full back and Joe Nightingale switching to centre back.

The Braves started very brightly and on a great pitch showed that they can play excellent football when the conditions are right.

There was a spirit and work ethic displayed by them in this match that was exciting to see. The visitors could easily have gone a couple in front with Jerry Nkrumah and Dean Frett just missing out.

Sawb'o Town 2, Eton Manor 3

Saturday 4th April 2009

The Manor's had Dean Frett and Courtney Mclean back in the side for this ESL League clash at Sawbridgeworth. The Braves elected to play up the slope in the first half and it was not long before the rampaging Jerry Nkrumah unsettled the home side defence with his direct and forceful running.

The visitors looked compact and sharp and could easily have gone in front early in the game but resolute defending kept them out. However it was the home side who struck first when the Manor failed to deal with an innocuous looking corner and the ball was forced home.

It did not take long for the response to come from the Braves as Jerry Nkrumah latched onto a through ball and smashed the ball into the Sawbo goal from the edge of the box, such was the ferocity of his strike , the keeper never moved. 1-1.

Paul Norris - "It's a Cruel Game!"

Monday 30th March 2009

Above: Paul Norris-
"The Hard Work Must
Start now!
"

The Manor's Head Coach Paul Norris tells it straight in the latest edition of Coaches Corner - Norris speaking to emfc.co.uk said" Since my last update the Manor’s chances of Silverware for the season have fallen by the wayside following the 3-2 semi final defeat at Burnham. Gutted is the only word that I can use to describe the way we all felt after the game. Our players gave it absolutely everything for 90 minutes. We came from behind twice and pretty much looked in control in the second half. Fair play to Burnham Ramblers– they worked extremely hard and it was a full blooded, committed match – as you would expect in a semi fina.l"

"However, the way we lost it was truly galling. Losing to goal that was so far offside that it made the one scored by William Gallas for Arsenal against Hull the same evening look like a borderline decision!!! It was, frankly, a joke of a decision by the linesman who had clearly missed the near post flick on by the Burnham player and our players deserved better than that – indeed I’d go as far as to say that the game deserved better than that after a thrilling contest."

"We need strength in depth"

The Manor The Manor started this game with five changes due to suspensions and enforced absences. However as Assistant Manager Nick Clark pointed out "these things happen during a long season and you have to make sure you have a squad to cover this ".

As the game started it appeared from early on that the visitors were more up for this game than some of the home side. Southend could easily have gone two up before the Braves came out of the traps. However it has to be said that the visitors were the better side throughout the first half even though against the run of play the home side managed to fashion a couple of decent chances .

Tuesday 17th March 2009

"We Wish Burnham good luck
in the Final against Enfield"

The Braves came to this semi final against Burnham Ramblers, brim full of confidence after their recent good results. Strangely though they took a good 15 minutes to get the long journey out of their legs and it was the home team that bossed the opening period.

There was a distinct lack of goal mouth action, neither side created much until a pass out by the Manor was intercepted down the left flankand keeper Nick Wilson was left stranded as the ball flew over him and nestled in the goal, 1-0 to Burnham. The visitors, driven on by their excellent skipper Dean Frett , now came into the game strongly.

Jerry Nkrumah was as combative and lively as always up front and after a slick passing move he played in Dean Frett who guided the cross expertly past the Burnham keeper to level the scores, 1-1.

The Braves started the game in a very low key way and for long periods seemed very lacking in momentum and drive.

Although they domonated the early exchanges and should have gone a couple in front it was the visitors who struck first and with the Manor defence caught square and vainly appealing for offside the opposition striker rounded the Manor keeper and slotted in from close range.

The home side were still unable to shake off their lethargy and it was only the irrepressible Jerry Nkrumah, playing up front, who showed any real threat to the visitors.

Retained Captaincy

Paul Norris The Manor's First Team Coach looks back at the recent Manor form and talks about the current and future prospects in the Cup. Norris speaking with emfc.co.uk said "I apologise that it’s been a while since my last update. I’m going to blame it on my short holiday in the South of France….. which wasn’t a "camping" holiday – Just in case Fretty is still confused.

It has been a tough period for the Manor in the past 6 weeks. For us to go 6 league games without a win when you look at the talent within our squad was not really acceptable. For us to concede 12 goals over the course of 3 games was even more alarming, and to score 3 goals away from home and lose…. in 2 consecutive away games was also disturbing"

Great Control & Vision

The Manor having had their mid week fixture called off because of a waterlogged pitch, the Braves were raring to go and dominated the opening exchanges with London Apsa at the Abbey.

Conditions were difficult underfoot at the end that the Manor were attacking, particularly down the left flank. The home side made all the running and with a little more fortune could have easily gone 3 goals in front in the first 15 minutes. It was left to Richard Simpson to put the Manor in front from a corner forced by the rampaging Jerry Nkrumah.

Cup Run,
absolute priority!

The Manor's first team boss Kevin Durrant is known for his direct approach' both on and off the field.
Durrant re-opened his Manager's comments section with a few home truths which Durrant feels needed to be said about the Manor's current league form.

Durrant speaking with emfc.co.uk said" It is with a sense of frustration and disappointment that I write these latest notes. 6 league games without a win has seen us fall from a strong position in the top 4 into a mid table position. The first of those games was a poor home performance against Basildon United, where we were extremely fortunate to leave with a point.

That was followed by two tight games against Takeley and Stansted that both turned against us in the last 20 minutes, but in all honesty could have gone either way. But it is the last three games of the run that have caused the most frustration"

The Manor arrived at this Essex Senior League match with their confidence sky-high after having beating Bowers 2-0 in the rearranged Quater Final Cup game during the week.

This confidence seemed well founded as they soon took charge against a slow starting Basildon. Although the playing surface was very uneven the Manor made several inroads into the home defence and from one of these Dean Frett battled for a loose ball in the opponents box and lifted the ball into the far corner to put the Manor in front after 10 minutes.

The Manor surrendered a two goal lead to end up sharing the spoils with Hullbridge at Waltham Abbey. In a goaless first half Manor created the best opening when Courtney Linton was played in down the right channel, but the visiting keeper was out quickly to smother. However, Linton made no mistake 15 minutes after the break when Tom Nyama and Jerry Nkrumah combined to give him a sight of goal from 12 yards.

The striker struck his firm shot into the roof of the net to give the home side the lead. 5 minutes later it looked as though Manor had sealed their fist win in 5 outings when Dean Frett ended his goal drought with a low shot into the far corner from just inside the Hullbridge box.

The Manor arrived for this hastily arranged game and were happy when the officials decided to play the match after having some remedial work done to an area that had been frozen overnight.

The Braves started this game with a 4-3-3- formation but reverted to their customary 4-4-2 after 20 minutes had been played. During this early part of the game Stansted had the better of the exchanges playing with the wind.

A soft, bobbly pitch made short, close passing an option that both sides eschewed and a more direct approach ensued.

Coaches Corner update for 2009. Head Coach Paul Norris looks back on recent games and shares his view on the current league position, Norris said "Greetings, and welcome to the first Coach’s Corner of 2009. It comes during a mini January break for the Manor, our next scheduled game is now next Thursday when we play Bowers & Pitsea in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy. Unfortunately that competition now looks like being our only chance of silverware this season.

Any possibility that we had of getting involved in the title race probably evaporated last week, which is a disappointment. We came back after Christmas and put ourselves right in the hunt with a fantastic victory at Southend Manor. We worked very, very hard that day and a wonderful goal from Michael Georghiou deservedly won us the game, although only after a panicky last 10 minutes and a top class save from Nick in goal.

The Manor started this match still without the injured Neil Barrett and with Steve Reading unwell. First Team Manager Kevin Durrant and his staff opted for 3 up top and after taking a little while to settle with this new formation they were certainly the equal of 2nd place Takely.

The heavy pitch meant a more direct approach was adopted by the home side although given the right conditions the Manor do try to get the ball down and play. It was evident that both sides were very much up for this encounter and chances were at a premium .

The Manor started this midweek home game with a new central defensive pairing of Steve Willis and Steve Reading "it was great to see them both back in action once again for the club" said The Manor General Manager Alex Lee.

With Richard Simpson slotting into the middle taking up a holding role' the Manor looked well prepared for this Mid-week League fixture.

The Manor started off very brightly' but Basildon soon showed that they were very dangerous on the break and Manor keeper Nick Wilson showed why he is the best keeper in the league when he made some great saves to keep the visitors at bay.

After these early alarms the home side took control for a while and a great move down the right flank allowed Danny Alleyne to play a great ball in for Joe May to slot in at the far post, 1-0 to the Manor.

This lead was short lived as the right side of the home defence was caught in possession and the visitors drilled a low deflected shot past the Manor keeper to level the scores.

Steve Willis rejoins the Manor after a few month spell away from the Club. Willis was the Skipper and played an integral part of the Cup Winning Manor side last season that also finished 4th in the Essex Senior League. Willis will be joined by Ex Manor Favorite Steve Reading both players eligible for the Cup Game against Bowers & Pitsea this Saturday.

On the injury front Midfielder Neil Barratt looks to be ruled out for a few months with a broken bone in his foot and Scott Lovett still not fully fit.

Manager Kevin Durrant is looking forward to Saturdays tie said "I am pleased to confirm the signing of Steve Willis, Steve played a major part in the success on the pitch here last year and his presence in the team will strengthen things up at the back for us"

Looking at the current injury list Durrant said " Neil Barratt's injury is a big blow for the team, his presence in midfield is essential to the balance of the side plus his 6ft 5" frame will be a big miss at set pieces Also still on the injury list is Scott Lovett, Scott is a great character and he is currently working hard to become match fit"

This was further enhanced when then Whitelocks Assistant Graham Chester took control of playing affairs and brought with him much needed finances combined with Chester's own ambition and drive for success in 2008 gave the Club it's first silverware in over 70 years of playing Senior Football. 2008 will be etched in the history of Eton Manor along with some fine goal scoring records mainly produced by prolific goal scorer Anton Stephenson with 42 competitive goals scored to his name in the 2007/2008 Season.

As we move into 2009 with the Club in the safe and experienced hands of First Team Manager Kevin Durrant and his Assistant Nick Clark plus coach Paul Norris the future of Eton Manor looks certain, currently sitting in 4th spot in the league 2009 promises to be a positive year for the Braves.

So my New Year wishes goes out to the hard working people both past and present for their contribution to Eton Manor Football Club and they should rest assured that their efforts & contributions will never be forgotten as Eton Manor Football Club will always be indebted to them now and in the future"

Have a joyous and Happy New Year to all the Eton Manor Family.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

wednesday 24th December 2008

"Merry Christmas
from everyone at the Manor"

Eton Manor Football Club Management and officials would like to take this opportunity to wish all their Supporters, volunteers, players and Staff a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Manor first team Manager Kevin Durrant marked his 100 days at the helm of the Club he said "It’s just over 100 days since I was appointed the manager at Eton Manor. We lost at Romford in the first game with the Manor team that had started the season, but since getting some of my own players in place, the record is: Played 17; Won 9; Drawn 5; Lost 3. The fifth of those 5 draws was at Hullbridge on Saturday. It ended 0-0 and it was slightly disappointing that we didn’t go on to claim all three points. We are good enough to nick games like that but the closest we came was Neil Barratt’s effort against the bar in the final 10 minutes.

However, the overall picture is positive, we ended the year without losing and I’m generally delighted with the performances in the games that I’ve been in charge. The players have really knuckled down to the task and we have played well in most of those games"

"Assured Performance"

The Manor travelled to Hullbridge in the league to face a side in very good form and a side always quite difficult to break-down.

New signings Joe Nightingill and Duane Miller made their debuts and both looked excellent additions top the side. The Manor soon broke away down the right and a great cross picked out Courtney Linton but he was unable to make the home side pay and a great early chance went over the bar.

The visitors bossed the game at the back and in midfield but although looking competent up front were just unable to fashion a clear cut chance against a resolute home rearguard.

A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year from Everyone at The Manor

Manor Manager

Kevin Durrant the Manor's first team Boss re-opens "Managers Comments" section on the website. Durrant said "I've eventually got around to writing this - my first notes for the website. Paul Norris has done an excellent job in the Coaches Corner section of our website in updating you and I'm grateful for that.

I'm just going to keep this short and sweet, but I'm generally pleased with how things have gone since I took over in September. We are doing ok in the league and still in one cup competition. Our ambition is to try and win the cup and finish as high as possible in the league table.

In terms of squad, we have the link up with Tilbury and Graham Chester, which has enabled us to get both Chris Barratt and now also Stevie Reading dual registered with both clubs. I'm pleased to have them both back involved with Eton Manor after their part in Chester's success here last season.

Shares his views

Paul Norris Head first team Coach talks frankly about the Manor's progress to date. Norris writing his December's 2008 Coaches Corner column Said "I think that the term is "back on track." That is certainly how we felt at quarter to five on Saturday in the visitors changing room at Burnham Ramblers.

I mentioned the disappointing performance against Mauritius Sports in the last update and unfortunately we were even worse against Bowers & Pitsea last weekend. It was not a good game of football and it wasn't helped by what one might call "some interesting refereeing". But after a very scratchy first half Bowers were the side who were able to pick up their level in the second half and they deserved their victory. We defended poorly, lacked a bit of energy in midfield and didn't show enough spark in attack"

"Goal Keeping Brilliance kept the Manor in the Game"

Before the game Manager Kevin Durrant and his staff were at pains to point out in the dressing room that the Manor needed to get back to winning ways if they were to maintain their position in the top five in the league. It was the home team however who had much the better of the first 15 minutes with the Manor struggling to mount any real attack and lacking at times the ability to clear out cleanly from the back.

Maybe the long trip was a factor in this poor opening but this Manor team does not lack a fighting spirit and it was this that gradually got them back into the match.

The Manor started this game as though they would comfortably extend their excellent run and dominated the opening exchanges.

They Braves looked very dangerous at corners and from one of these, Richard Simpson laid the ball into the path of Remi Nelson who nearly put away a great strike only to see the Bowers keeper claw his effort away.

In the next passage of play, a great through ball from Michael Giorgiou put away Courtney Linton for a one on one with the keeper but once again the Manor were denied. Bowers were trying to catch the home defence on the break and from one of these sporadic attacks a needless penalty was conceded.

Coaches Corner - Update

Head Coach

Coaches Corner update. Paul Norris Head Coach at the Manor shares his thoughts and veiws of a united Coaching/Managment staff at the Manor Norris said "Thanks to all those who gave positive comments on the first coach’s corner column and even to those of you who didn’t. I have to say our dressing room is a good place to be at the moment, there are plenty of characters in there none more so than the big man in goal. Nick Wilson’s new “fines list” has sparked a little bit of debate to say the least and Sam Carter’s pink polo shirt was the first fashion faux pas to fall foul of the crackdown!

Onto more serious matters though and we are all disappointed that the club’s defence of the League Cup, won by Graham Chester and his team last season, is over. We worked our socks off in the two games against Barkingside to put ourselves back in the mix and you can’t help feeling that we let that slip away a little bit with some silly mistakes against Mauritius.

Eton Manor are out of the Cup Competeion they won last Season. The Manor started this game knowing that only a win would take them through to the quarter finals. Manager Kevin Durrant and his staff had done brilliantly in even getting their side to this position .

The first half was dominated by the home side with their opponents offering nothing in the way of an attacking threat.

Mauritius seemed content to play with a lone striker who spent his time being caught offside. Their defence was repeatedly stretched by the Manor attack and only a succession of fouls halted the home side.

The game was disrupted by these tactics from the visitors and made sustained momentum difficult. Perhaps a less lenient referee might have taken a stricter approach to the visitors time wasting and niggling fouls. Having said that, the home side should have gone in at the interval well in front but poor finishing had let them down and the game remained scoreless.

forever industrious, & scored two goals

Eton Manor welcomed new signings Remi Nelson and Laide Adeyemi to the squad , brought in by the Manager Kevin Durrant to replace the injured Manor Frontman Scott Lovett and Jordan Childs.

The Manor were soon in control of this game against an APSA side operating with a solitary striker.

New boy Remi Nelson was soon in action down the left flank and his close control and crossing ability troubled the home side. The Manor were quite prepared to pass their way out from the back and dominated the game. Following a foul on striker Courtney Linton up stepped Joe May to deliver a great free kick into the opposition box and Dean Frett ghosted in to head the opener after 15 minutes.

London APSA's attacks never gave the Manor defence any real problems and after a hopeful through ball was collected by Manor keeper Nick Wilson, his precise clearance was fastened onto by Remi Nelson whose excellent touch and control enabled him to glide through a static defence and put the Manor two up after 32 minutes.

The Manor playing Barkingside again as this was the third consecutive time that the teams were encountering each other.

The Barkingside pitch was in great condition considering all the rain that had fallen on it and both sides were soon making use of the slick surface.

The home side though, soon took control of the game and Manor keeper Nick Wilson was soon in action, coming off his line to deny the opposition.

This was only a short respite for the Manor as they again failed to keep possession up front and a swift interchange of passes by Barkingside put them through into a one on one with the Manor keeper and this time Barkingside made no mistake and took a well deserved lead....

The Manor started this Essex Senior league game in positive mode and given the weather conditions played some excellent attacking football. Their wide players, Dean Frett and Joe May were especially prominent .

The defence was solid and the midfield lively and incisive and up front their was pace and good movement off the ball. Barkingside were being well held and it was no surprise when after 17 minutes the Manor opened the scoring. Manor pre match talk, Manager Kevin Durrant and his assistant Nick Clark emphasised how important it would be to quickly go onto the offensive and take the game to their opponents.

The Manor penned Barking into their half straight away and looked very lively playing with the wind. The ever willing Dean Frett forced a corner down the left flank and the Manor big guns, Richard Simpson & Ricky Hayles came up for it. A great delivery by Joe May and excellent Manor movement in the box enabled Hayles to head in unmarked at the far post with the keeper nowhere near his powerful finish, 1-0 to the Manor.

Continued domination by the home side forced Barking onto the defensive and any attack that the visitors did try to mount was quickly snuffed out by a Manor defence superbly led by Richard Simpson who was back after injury.

Man of the Match

The Manor Boss Kevin Durrant his assistant Nick Clark and coach Paul Norris all agreed that given the uneven surface at Clapton the Manor needed to be more direct in their approach play and not be caught out playing too much football in the wrong areas.

Their thinking was spot on and the Manor soon took control and bombarded the Clapton goal and it was only the brilliance of their keeper that kept out the Manor.

Save after save was made and great efforts by Courtney Linton, Neil Barrett and Jordan Childs were denied. Joe May was having an excellent game down the right flank and just when it seemed that the Manor would have nothing to show for their total domination, Joe May received a ball just inside the Clapton box, instantly controlled it with his first touch and then volleyed it past the despairing keeper, 1-0 to the Manor.

The Manor started off very strongly, with new signings Carl Bailey, Mark Benterman , Neil Barrett and Courtney Linton soon showing their prowess. It soon became one way traffic, with Hullbridge completely on the defensie.

It was no surprise when Richard Simpson drove home the ball after a great corner by Joe May. The Manor could have been more goals to the good after hitting the woodwork and seeing goalbound attempts kept out by last ditch defendind.

Hullbridge made the occasional foray into the Manor half but their forward momentum was always cut short by the Manor midfield and defence. For the Manor the wide play of Jordan Childs and Joe May was creating serious problems for the home side and Neil Barrett and the tireless Dean Frett dominated the middle of the park, Behind them the back four of Mark Benterman, Richard Simpson, Ricky Hales and Carl Bailey snuffed out any danger and keeper Nick Wilson was always on hand to tidy up.

Manager Kevin Durrant was also forced to play striker Junior Abod as a defender due to the absense of his regular central defenders.

On the night the Manor came up against a very good Stanway side who took the lead after 5 minutes. New Manor striker Courtney Linton looked a real find and his pace and control led to him scoring a great equaliser with a shot into the top corner. Manor, however looked exposed at the back and they were given a torrid time by the visitors who ran in 3 more goals before half time to effectively put the game beyond the reach of the Manor.

The Manor were very confident of doing well in this match and winning some needed prize money. Perhaps they were overly confident and their opponents sensing an upset really took the game to a lack lustre Manor side.

FC Benfica seemed much more composed and forged some decent opennings and Manor keeper Nick Wilson had to be at his best to keep Manor in the game.

Alex Lee - Club General Manager sends out a message to anyone and everyone that wishes to help the Manor, Lee said "Our Chairman Reg Curtis has asked that it be made clear that the Manor are very, very much up against it from a financial standpoint. We need just twenty members or ex members or ex players to make a standing order of twenty pounds per month to the club. This is equivalent to a couple of drinks a week!

You know as past members or players what a fantastic feeling it was to be part of Eton Manor and the friendships that ensued and for those of you that joined at Riseholme Street what a wonderful club it was giving one the ability to converse with Lords and Ladies and offering job opportunities in the City to many members. We receive no grants at all from any of the inner City Boroughs and the majority of our playing base still comes from the East End and Essex. A noble band of a few ex players and supporters support us financially but even with this support we struggle on from week to week. Is twenty pounds per month too much to ask to keep a club with a 100 year tradition , playing in Senior football?"

Please contact Alex Lee at alex@ad2it.org if you can help or ring him on 07860 341 316.

Cove's last game in charge was against Barking on Saturday, which saw the Manor lose by a slim 1-0 margin. Cove spoke after the game, he said" It is with sincere regret that my last game in charge of the Manor is today, this is mainly due to work commitments, I therefore resign from the Club that I have loved and played for since I was 10 years of age.

When I was first approached by the Chairman I was honored to take up the role. However, due to issues beyond my control I feel it would not be right to try and continue if I am not able to commit 100% of my time and focus.

I would like to thank Reg Curtis and Alex Lee for the opportunity and wish Eton Manor Football Club every success for the future"
